This intensive workshop is for actors, dancers, theatre makers, artists and curious souls who would like to expand their physical vocabulary and investigate the relationship between body, movement, voice, emotion and text. Participants will get in close contact with Rudolf Laban’s Movement Analysis in a physical and imaginative way for the sake of character and scene development. A variety of exercises will encourage participants to engage with and understand their habitual physical rhythms and how these can be manipulated in order to reach a heightened poetic dimension of movement, timing and space. With an even split focus on theory and practice, my objective is to grow your confidence with the following:

-          Improved tools for tackling character and scene work.

-          Making bold yet grounded choices.

-          Getting out of your head and into your body.

-          Understanding your habitual physicality.

-          Connecting with character quickly and physically

-          Activating a wider range of expression for both body and voice.

Rudolf Laban spent years investigating the psycho-physical relationship within humans from which he formed a collection of fundamental principles of embodied practice and analysis. Basically, he created a language to quickly understand how our bodies move the way they do when we feel or think a certain way, and vice versa. By understanding these links ourselves, we can activate our bodies and free ourselves from heady and dense psychological character work. This is especially useful when the text we’re given is lacking in abundant information or we're in a state of exploration for a piece of character work.

No experience of Laban is necessary for this course as will be introducing his concepts from the ground up, while those with Laban understanding are also encouraged to get involved as we can always dive deeper into this work!
